I am testing out a brand-new External Optical drive ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U for use with my Mac OS X 10.6.8. The Mac recognizes the new drive, and when I insert a DVD into it, the Disk with its title appears on my desktop. Also, QuickTime Player is activated. However, when I click onto the Disk, I get a rectangle with folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. The VIDEO_TS leads me to a large number of .VOB and .BUP choices. The .VOBs lead me to iPhoto where I am told the files are unreadable. The .BUPs lead me to iTunes (Movies), where the video does not appear.

Pardon the dumb-soundingness of this next question. (I think I already know the answer.) Does this mean my Mac OS X 10.6.8 cannot play a DVD?
Next Question (not quite so dumb): Since I’m mainly interested in burning DVDs, can I proceed on the assumption that the External Optical drive ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U will successfully burn my next masterpiece, even though I cannot view a DVD using it?
If you’ve been charitable enough to read this far, let me tell you the next obstacle I anticipate meeting. After I’ve plowed through iMovie, iTunes, and iDVD – when I’m ready to burn! – how do I indicate that I wish to burn using the new External Optical drive ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U, rather than OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H --which is the original (now non-functioning) burner built into the computer?
